  • Ten Ideas on How to Give Your Holiday Event a Social Purpose

We have gathered ideas from our own events and surveyed several socially conscious San Francisco Bay Area companies to compile a list of 10 Great Ideas and Practices that are transforming year-end holiday parties into events with a social purpose.

    1. Adopt a family(s) from a nonprofit in your area. Have employees donate and wrap needed items during your holiday event. After the event, have employees deliver the gifts to the needy families.
    2. Have a "One Warm Coat" drive. At your event, collect gently used coats donated by employees and present them during your holiday event to a representative from a nonprofit organization.
    3. Invite charitable organizations to make a short presentation at your holiday event to explain who they serve and how employees can sign up as volunteers. Set a company wide goal for volunteer sign ups.
    4. At your holiday event, hold a drive to sign up employees for a fundraising walk or run. Provide corporate sponsorship for “Teams in Training” for 10K races or marathons (e.g. Nike women’s marathon – a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society).
    5. Create a theme and décor for your holiday event based on an organization you are supporting (e.g. Save the Rain Forest, Pink decor for breast cancer, Red décor for AIDS/HIV, Green décor for environmental issues – Save the Earth, Go Green).
    6. Put out a “call for nominations” for employees who have performed exemplary public service. Recognize and reward them at your holiday event with certificates for paid time off to perform charitable work.
    7. Hire youth musical or theatrical organizations to perform at your holiday event and donate to their program/s.
    8. At your holiday event, raffle or gift products produced by charitable organizations. Hire a charitable organization to cater your event (E.g. Delancey Street Foundation)
    9. Make your company holiday event a hands-on teambuilding event - assemble bicycles, toys or other items to be donated to needy children.
    10. Have employees donate used books, CDs, DVDs for a silent auction held at your holiday event. Donate the proceeds to a charitable organization.
