Modeled on the White Conferences on Small Business, the 2008 Governor’s Conference on Small Business and Entrepreneurship convened the state’s top small business leaders, educators, government officials and leading entrepreneurs. Governor Schwarzenegger's goals for the conference included:
- Create a new forum and sustained network for small businesses owners, entrepreneurs and small business advocacy organizations that will facilitate sharing ideas, visions and business practices.
- Encourage dialog among different business sectors, industries, generations, ethnic groups and regions of the state with the purpose of identifying a common agenda.
- Create ten caucus groups moderated and run by small business leaders and entrepreneurs that are tasked with drafting action-based policy recommendations.
On site at the conference, attendees voted on a total of 50 policy recommendations on issues including access to capital, economic workforce development, entrepreneurial encouragement, healthcare, and taxation. The top ten policy recommendations that received the most votes were presented to Governor Schwarzenegger for his consideration. The Governor’s Conference was designed to be the centerpiece of California’s participation in Global Entrepreneurship Week (www.unleashingideas.org), a first-ever, worldwide entrepreneurship event that spotlighted the innovative enterprises of young people worldwide. Kauffman Foundation CEO and President, Carl Schramm, joined Governor Schwarzenegger on stage at the conference to officially launch Global Entrepreneurship Week. The launch was broadcast LIVE via video web cast to a global audience.
